We were woken up at 7.40am with someone phoning us to check out how much wind there was in our neck of the woods. As I stumbled to the window and peeped out of the curtains it was clear it was too windy even at that early hour. A few hours of shall-we-shan’t-we debating followed, but in the end we wrote off going to the Malverns and spent the day sorting out the garden instead. It was a beautiful day, sunny, little cumulus, just way too windy.

By 7pm we were considering going out for an evening flight, but the wind stations were giving increasing winds, so I started packing for Piedrahita instead. It was a good decision – even at 9.45pm the trees were still thrashing.

Forecast for today...Geoff writes: windy, cloudy but dry. Not too much of a problem since it gave us the chance to do some (paid) work, some Long Mynd committee stuff, and then go to archery.

And, most important, finish off and upload a new podcast, with Judith interviewing Tom Payne about his preparation for the X-Alps. Just listened to it myself, and it’s really interesting. It will be followed by another by Tom after the X-Alps is over. We’ve got more in the pipeline too, not least because we’re getting pretty good feedback about them, and they seem both popular and useful. They do take a while to create, both doing the interview itself, which we usually do over Skype; and the subsequent editing, which takes some hours. But they’re fun to create, and we’ve learnt a lot from the people Judith has interviewed, as, I hope, has everyone else.

See the tab at the top of the page for the link to the podcasts.

Geoff writes: we are well aware that we are incredibly lucky in the way we can live our lives. Because our work is internet based, we can work from anywhere; and because it is quite specialised (running online conferences, primarily for education), we can pick and choose when to work, so we concentrate the bulk of our work in the winter months, when the nights are long. So we have a huge amount of flexibility. However, the run up to the various winter conferences is starting now (typically, the work and the planning starts six months or so ahead), and we had our first face to face meeting today with one of our clients, in Leicester. Incredibly, it coincided with lousy weather – you can normally guarantee that when we do have a meeting we have to attend, it will be great weather. Not today, though.

This is tagged as boring stuff, because we never bothered creating a work category. But actually, running online conferences is quite interesting for us! But maybe we’re just nerds…..

Forecast for today...Cracking morning, but it wasn’t to last. We went into Shrewsbury to run some errands and got rained on a lot. On the way back we went scouting for sites. We really need a SW site more locally which can take some wind and Roy Dade has possibly found such a site.

We got there and climbed up to the summit and the site looks doable. We explored it a bit and then walked back diagonally across the field. I don’t know how we managed it, but we ended up at a fence we hadn’t seen before, were we were chased by a heard of frisky young cows and had to jump over a fence whilst they ran up to it full pelt and then stopped just short, snorting and sniffing. I have no idea how we managed to get lost in a square field, but we did and had to walk the boundary of the field to get back to the starting point at launch to walk back to the car which was perfectly obvious once we were there. Of course, as soon as we were 5 minutes from the car the skies opened and we got soaked.

Forecast for today...Horrible, horrible day. Raining hard from the moment we woke up, we spent the morning working, sorting out registering the book with the ISBN agency, sending a copy to the contributors, etc. and then we went off the Shrewsbury for some shopping. The highlight (if there is such a thing in shopping) was the DIY shop. You can now buy a real effect fire which is a flat screen, stuck in a real fire place effect surround, with a video of a fire on an endless loop.  They cost £699! I stood there laughing so hard there were tears running down my face and the shop assistants were giving me withering looks.

Nice morning, but by afternoon it was raining and we have been out so much recently that we spent the day catching up on work. Boring, really.
