Geoff writes: today our Supporting Deaf People conference opened for reading. This is the week when delegates can download and read/view the numerous presentations, in preparation for the discussions themselves starting next week. So, whilst we had a lot to do this morning, sending out registration info, etc., we were planning to take a couple of hours off this afternoon to go flying. But it wasn’t to be – nice warm day, blue skies, but very windy, north everwhere, rather than just a tramuntana, and the wind machines were giving variations on north, so it seemed unlikely Santa Brigida – or anywhere else – would be working. So we went for the old standby of a beer and a sandwich in Besalu.

And tonight, Judith is recording another podcast, which will be released in the next few weeks.

The plan was to work in the morning and then head out to Santa Brigida at lunch time to get a quick flight. However, the synoptic showed an occluded front coming in and Meteocat was giving deteriorating conditions. By mid-day, the sky had clouded over and the wind direction was also wrong, so we didn’t bother going out. It was a good call, the rainfall radar showed precipitation at Santa Brigida in the afternoon and it snowed on El Mont. We’re nearly there with the conference, just waiting for one last straggler of a presentation…

Brrrr! It’s cold.

We were supposed to go skiing today, but the forecast front came in early and they were predicting sporadic snow above 400m. We’re fair weather skiers, and couldn’t be bothered with the cloud and lumpy snow, never mind possibly having to mess around with snow chains on the way home. Instead we got on with some overdue work. It was grey here and there was some rain – the first since the 23rd of December. We’ve had the heating on all day, which is pretty unusual.

Worse weather tomorrow. We may even get some snow here.

The strong winds forecast materialised in the night and I was woken twice by some hefty gusts. Some of the more brittle trees below us have blown over, but no damage to our house.

The wind isn’t strictly tramunata now, but a north wind due to squeezed isobars – we’re in the middle of three pressure systems. I was glad we went skiing yesterday, since today they were forecasting ‘torb’ (nevasca or viento blanco in Spanish), which is a snow/ice blizzard caused by strong winds. It can cause a temperature drop of over 20C and causes whiteout conditions. We skied in torb last year and the top of the resort was shut as the temperatures (with wind chill) dropped to -50C.

We considered going out to try and fly, but the weather stations were giving N or NNE in Angles and St Feliu de Pallerols and we can’t spare the time just to go on the off-chance that it’s flyable. We open the next conference to presenters on Wednesday and need to get everything ready, so when it’s not guaranteed flyable, we need to get on with it. Gorgeous sunny day though….

Geoff writes: a bit dull, and we have a lot of work to do, so we stayed in. Weather nice again from tomorrow, though a few days of high winds are expected.

Geoff writes: we’ve been out the last seven days, skiing or flying (and yesterday, failing to fly) so we decided to stay in today to catch up on some work for our fast approaching conference. The forecast was not that good either, and in fact it was cloudy here (and east of here) all day, though nice and sunny inland, including at the ski resorts. So we got a lot of work done, which was good.

The weather is getting much cooler over the next week, which is good for the skiing – even if it doesn’t snow (though some is forecast for Wednesday) the snow quality should be good.

Forecast for today.Geoff writes: a grey day, there was an outside chance it was soarable, but we decided to stay in and do some work, and Judith had to get the next LMSC newsletter out. It did spit a bit with rain too at times, so even if it had been flyable, it would probably not have been that interesting.

Next week, though, is looking nice, with lighter winds, and a little less warm, so the skiing could be ok.
