We were woken up at 5am this morning by a terrific crash outside the house. It turned out to be a huge thunderstorm. The lightning was coming so fast that the thunder wasn’t keeping up. A couple of minutes later we would hear the roar of the rain, and I drowsily got out of bed to check that the street hadn’t turned into a river. It had, and the water started coming through the front door. Going upstairs I found water in both the kitchen and the top floor, where the rain and hail was hitting the windows so hard it was coming through the seals.
You get storms like this in summer, but we’ve never seen anything like it in autumn. The thunder and lightening carried on for 5 hours. The river outside the house has turned from near empty to a brown torrent, nearly lapping the allotments across the way. It’s been raining ever since.
