I was in hospital for my pre-op until the afternoon, so Geoff went to hang glide at the Long Mynd. It was very strong so he waited for the wind to drop. It wasn’t easy to get away and no one did.
I arrived at the site about 3.30pm and by 4pm the wind had dropped and paragliders started flying. I had a 20 minute boat about with the odd thermal thrown in. It switched off pretty quickly once it started dropping.
In the evening we went to the club AGM. I won Best Female Pilot for last year.
We went flying today at Corndon. It was overcast to start with, but then increasingly the sky cleared and it became sunny. Katie, Rich and Nigel were already there and we headed to the SE face. After a chat we got ready and the buzzards were out in numbers, but didn’t seem to want to go very high before flapping and searching for the lift.
I launched when I saw three birds in a thermal close by, but high up, and got a little bubble, then sink and I thought I was going down when I got a low save. I clung to it for all I was worth and thermalled along the ridge until I got to the NE end. It was weak lift and strong drift, and at 541 feet ATO not worth throwing myself over the back with, so I headed back to the front. Mark, Kai, James, Paul, Alan and Gordon turned up and we all tried our best to get a good climb, but although the sky got better the wind picked up and grounded us all for a couple of hours.
Geoff and I flew again later and I attempted (and managed) to jump the fence for the first time. Nice evening soaring.
Judith 21 Apr 2008 | : Archery, Flying
Weather seemed to finally pick up a bit and it wasn’t quite as cold as previous days. It was warm enough for us to brave the outside world and go for our first archery session of the year. The field was very boggy after a big competition shoot on Sunday, but it was good to shoot again. Funny how you discover muscles you didn’t remember you had in the first place!
In the evening it seemed to have dropped off enough to go flying at Corndon, but when we got there it was strong. Two other guys turned up whilst we were reading our books in the car, but we decided to can the day when it became clear that the wind was actually picking up. Tomorrow looks better. Fingers crossed.

We drove home to Norbury and started unpacking the boxes…

We drove all night (bar three hours of cramped sleep in the front seats of the van), and got to the UK at lunchtime. We stayed with Geoff’s family for the night and had a nice dinner.
