I’ve been looking at July and have come up with some stats. Everyone knows it was a poor month, and this doesn’t apply to any areas apart from here and it’s worth noting that we don’t go in for desperation flying, but we only flew paragliders seven times and hang gliders three times. 19 days were a complete write-off for flying, due to wind and rain. We only went xc four times and Geoff only tried and failed to fly twice (it was that clear cut when it wasn’t flyable). This is shockingly poor for summer.
In contrast, in February, we flew paragliders 13 days, skied six days, went to the beach twice, tried and failed to fly twice and only lost 5 days completely to the weather. Roll on winter…
Geoff writes: we did eventually fly today. The forecast was a front clearing at some point in the day, after dumping lots of rain – early would mean a good day, possible XC; late would mean just ridge soaring. In the end it was late, of course. We drove up the Long Mynd about 3.30, as it was clearing. Light winds, so I didn’t take the hang glider. People were flying but struggling to stay up. We went to the front, unpacked, trying to avoid all the wet sheep shit. I clipped in, at which point the wind abruptly picked up, a lot, and that was it for the next four hours. The only person flying was Wayne, who had taken his hang glider. I could have gone home and got mine, but I was sulking. In the end, we did go home, and did bits and pieces for an hour, going out again just before 7.00, when it was dropping. Had a pleasant evening flight on the PG for an hour or so, at which point it started picking up again, wave probably, and I landed. Others who didn’t land in time, landed backwards.
Still, overall, a pleasant end to the day.

We had a good start to the season here in Sussex. This month has been diabolical though Mark has broken the Dyke record twice, Carlo the Caburn record and yesterday Mark Watts and Craig Atwell became the first paragliders to fly over the Thames!

Superb flying by Wagga and Craig. The BBC forecasters said this had been the coldest July (or was it wettest, can’t remember)since, wait-for-it, 1888 🙁
Andy
Coldest. Wettest ever was in 1939 (I think that’s what they said on the radio).
According to here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8177094.stm
this July has been the wettest since 1988, but the forecaster definitely said 1888! Must have been a freudian slip brought on by Seasonal Affective Disorder (the UK summer variety!) …. 🙁
Ok, because I am clearly bored and work shy, here are the stats for last year:
Flying PG: 8 days
Plying HG: 3 days
XC flights: 5
Written off days: 20
We didn’t have a ‘trying but failing to fly’ category then and some of the written off days other people flew, but so late we didn’t bother or it was very marginal.
So the moral is… go on holiday abroad in July!
…..by contrast the conditions in the Pyrenees have been superb. Sorry Judith to rub it in!
You didn’t really convince me you were sorry there Mike 🙂
hey Mike! Where have you been hiding…..and why are we infested with Frenchies in Àger escaping the crappy French weather? Not that Àger has been anything to get excited about with too much wind and generally from the wrong direction! Tell me where you are finding this superb flying and I’ll be there, probably tomorrow…
… so not only was he not sorry to rub it in, he was making it all up too! tsk tsk!
HI Geoff and Judith,
There’s a similar thread of desperation been going on the LLSC Google group.
Its another great reason for keeping a logbook (Had to get that in ! )
Our Club flying log (http://www.llsclub.org.uk/flying_log.html ) is an attempt to collate all the flights in the CLub – to help provide a more accurate overall record of conditions. Its not yet been updated for July, so here’s an indication from my logbbook of how this July in Scotland has compared with previous years.
July 09 – 9 Flyable (8 of which were XC days ) (Although 2 of these were at the Mynd )
July 08 – 9 Flyable (8 of which were XC days )
July 07 – 12 Flyable (5 of which were XC days )
July 06 – 13 Flyable (8 of which weer XC days )
Not sure what conclusions can be drawn from that !
