We spent this morning phoning around trying to get the inside info on the motorcross rally at the Gyrn to see if it was still viable to go there with the comp. The north Wales guys said that the comp would not be too adversersely affected, so off to the Gyrn we went. The forecast was for very cloudy weather, and it was also much windier than we expected. Wayne phoned on the way to say he was going to fly Middletown, as Martin and Dave B. were already 2000′ ATO there. By this time we were already at the foot of the Gyrn, and 15 people were in the air, so we carried on.
It was windy but flyable, but I have not been so unmotivated to fly for months. I just couldn’t be bothered to sit around in strong winds. I chatted for a while, whilst Geoff flew and had a nice time. A couple of people ventured over the back and they reported horrible, rough, strong conditions, so much so that they closed the competition window temporarily.
I did eventually pull myself together and flew both the Aspen 2 and the Sigma 7. The task was activated by 4 people flying more than 5km, which several people did. Longest flight was 17km, which according to the NWHGPC web site must be the new site record.
In the evening we went to the comp hog roast.

Didn’t want to drive too far in distinctly iffy conditions. Wrekin looked blown out, Llantisillio too far, Gyrn too busy so opted for Middletown. Didn’t 3jam as we’re not supposed to fly there! Took off at the lump above the quarry & soared for a couple of hours getting onto Moel y Golfa. Maybe 2000 ft ASL – but only 900 ft ATO.
Top landed to chat with with Martin & Pete W. then had another short(ish) flight and landed in the saddle. Interesting flying but not EPIC.
Would have liked to fly to the Gyrn but wind too much South & sky didn’t open up enough.
Thank’s Judith for that report..:-) for a second, after seeing Xc flight logged from the gyrn… I thought that i had missed my chance despite the forecast saying wales was worst.
If you were to land on the Ormes it’s 70km in a straight line…I know, I checked yesterday morning!!
A few of us went to Bunster where it was ok…ish for soaring but nothing better,so drove back up to Rushup to find similar “S/Boaring” conditions.I enjoy soaring too BUT this was worst than watching paint dry so I didn’t fly, and watch “them” fy..PUB o’clock!
Didn’t fancy the crowds at the Gyrn and Bache was closed so went to Middletown to join Dave and co. As Dave says, not epic but worth going….

Decided it wasn’t worth the long trip to the BCC, although the comp was won by Kevin McCloughlin (Dales) with an epic 17K.

I had a pleasant hour’s ridge soaring at Parlick mid-afternoon on the way to visit friends in Lancaster.
Had fun at Middletown despite iffy conditions, it makes it a bit more interesting to hop to moel y golfa and back a few times getting low and scratching back up. As Dave said we only got to about 2100’amsl and I guess we could have gone over the back but the sky didnt look like it was going to allow any distance. At one point I was above moel y golfa with about 6 buzzards very close, not seen so many in the same place or so close before, they didnt buzz me so I just followed them around ’til they dispersed. Middletown is one of my fave hills – the consensus seems to be keep flying it in small ‘unofficial’ groups – best not to 3jam…
Had a good day at the Gyrn I didn’t find it rough and to strong! After about hour and a half got to cloud base and off I went for my first XC made 10k as most did. Landing in a valley, big mistake as I cleared the ridge had a big asymmetric, once in the valley got into valley wing and landed no probs.
