We thought about doing some local tourist things today, but the promised rain put us off. We got a phone call early on to say it was sunny/bright near Welshpool and were amazed to look out of the window and find someone happily soaring the Mynd, despite the SW wind. It was tempting to have a go ourselves, but we pulled ourselves together and did one of the jobs we have been putting off for ages… shopping.

On the way to Shrewsbury at 11am it started spitting and it carried on raining with greater or lesser intensity all day. We actually had quite a productive day. The remaining prizes for the Bash are bought, we’ve looked at cars, phones and ebook readers, and I even got some clothes and a month’s worth of groceries. Then home to lie down with a cold compress – it always takes me a few hours to recover from a shopping trip.

Geoff writes: forecast showery and windy at times, we decided to make this a working day. As it happens I did see one paraglider – maybe a speed wing – groundhandling on the Mynd; don’t know if they flew, but there were quite a few showers at times. We had a productive day in the office instead.

But many congratulations to Dave Thomas, who did do 33km from Much Marcle, a Malverns site. And at the time of writing this, late on Sunday evening, the only flight entered for today.

More howling weather so another day for doing jobs. We’ve discovered a vole infestation in the garden, so it’s all bumpy and full of holes.

LMSC committee meeting this evening, which was really productive.

We played a quick April Fool prank on a friend (who shall remain nameless) and then loaded up the van, said our final farewells to the neighbours and set off with heavy hearts. The sky was obviously fantastic until the border, but 100km into France it started to rain. As we got closer to Millau there was hail, so we didn’t even stop. By the time we got to the Auvergne region the sun was shining, so we picked a town at random and got off the motorway for a break. The town we had chosen was St Flour, which is perched on a rock. Ironically, the ‘rock’ is made of basalt, so we got a sense of home as we wandered around looking at the houses perched on the edge of a cliff made of columns.

After that it was a long slog to Abbeville, where we arrived at 2.30am to sleep in the front seats of the van in a motorway service station.

See photos of today.

Yet another disappointing day. It’s like autumn – too warm to ski, too windy to fly and too grey to walk.  The weather was worse than the picture indicates.

We had the van fixed this morning (brakes were grinding and pads needed replacing)  and halfheartedly did some jobs. One of the jobs was to shop for the booze and treats to take back to the UK. We were hoping that we would get two days at the beach, one day flying in Berga and one day at Bellmunt, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Our France trip is also looking increasingly unlikely with strong winds forecast for Millau and the Puy de Dome next week. If the weather is better here – which is almost certainly the case – we’ll stay here until we need to drive up for our ferry. Millau is a beautiful place, great flying site – but, except in summer, seems always to have crap weather. Or maybe it’s only crap from October to March, which is when we drive through on the way to and from the UK.

Geoff writes: Not a particularly nice day, with some rain in the morning, but not as much as we expected. A day for doing bits of work, and preparing for moving back to the UK. There was a brief moment where we thought it might be flyable, but we didn’t even consider going out.

However, nice weather for the rest of the week. Skiing tomorrow morning (before it turns slushy), then crossing into France to try to fly at Targasonne. That’s the plan…
