Overcast, windy and chilly, there was no way it was flyable for paragliders. We took the hang glider up the Mynd in the afternoon, but it was gusty and off to the south, so we decided to wait and see what happened and went to do archery instead.

Rich came along to have a go and he’s a natural. After about half an hour he moved on to 30 yards and he’s really accurate. When I first started I couldn’t hit the stand, never mind getting golds!

On the way back it was even further off and we didn’t even bother to stop and check the wind.

Geoff writes: well, amazingly enough, it was flyable, for hang gliders at least. In the morning we loaded up the van with my hang glider, the paragliders and the archery stuff. Drove past the Mynd launch. It was windy, big clouds, but probably ok for hang gliders. We carried on driving and went to archery for a leisurely few hours, doing some shooting, getting some coaching advice, and chatting.

We then drove back to the Mynd, late afternoon, where the wind had picked up, but the sky was perfect. Pete had flown his hang glider a couple of times already. I rigged, and though the wind was still strong, had a nice flight for an hour, getting around 1600′ ATO, before leaving the thermal and coming back to the front – I could have gone with it, but it was late in the day and not worth it. I thought it was quite smooth, though Wayne said it was a bit rough.

People were still flying hang gliders when we left, getting quite high (maybe there was some wave about) and a red streamer, Stewart, was about to launch. Hopefully, you had a good flight Stewart!

The wind never really dropped enough for paragliders (other than Nigel on his Bobcat, a speedwing), though right at the end of the day, as it was getting dark, we did see two PGs flying.

So for me at least it was a fun day, and the first flight on the HG for a few months.

Wenlock AbbeyThis might be the last sunny day for a while, so we were determined not to spend it in front of the computers.

In the spirit of trying to discover more places around here, we went to Much Wenlock and looked at the abbey (great audio tour) and then the Guildhall. A snooze in the petal covered church yard later, we headed off to Wenlock museum, and learnt all about the modern Olympic movement. Didn’t see many sporting types round town though!

On the way home we went and did some archery. Since it was even windier than yesterday, we had our work cut out and at one point the arrows were all pointing sideways, despite us shooting them supposedly straight. Rain and more wind for the rest of the week. Wish we were still in Spain!

See photos of today.

Geoff doing archery.Very windy again, but a lovely sunny day otherwise. In the afternoon we went to do archery. Since this year seems to be dominated by wind, we might as well practise perfecting our technique in these conditions.

Whenever my accuracy gets worse it is inevitably my release which is to blame and hey presto, as soon as I concentrated on doing it properly my shooting improved immensely. A couple of times I nearly got blown over, never mind the bow and arrows going all over the place. Still nice to be out…

Mike Hoppet's band!Wind, lots of it. It was a glorious hot day, with an epic sky, but way, way too much breeze. We worked, did archery, where I pulled a muscle in my shoulder because I didn’t warm up properly, and then we went out to Bishop’s Castle to see Mike Hoppet’s band. They were excellent. As it was open mic night, Mark L. played as well. Nice bit of drumming!

Forecast for today...We’re getting very bored with the weather. Windy today, so we went to do archery, but we only managed an hour before the rain came in. Instead I edited the podacst on our SIV course. It features Pat Dower and Geoff and is online now. We’re quite hopeful that it might actually be flyable tomorrow.

Forecast for today...It was going to be a great day, if it wasn’t too windy, but it became clear by 10am that it would be. We did some painting, then went to archery, but the wind was affecting our shooting and at 40 yards it makes more of a difference.

In the evening we went to the LMSC AGM, which must have been the worst attended one ever, with mostly ex-, current and future committee members there. Only a handful of ‘normal’ members turned up. I have been re-elected for the Comms and PR post and Geoff is the new LMSC chairman.
