Another sunny and windy day. It’s been non-stop socialising for us since the conference finished. Rabbit and meatballs at Debi’s on Saturday, dinner with my folks Sunday and lunch with our friends Montse and Christian today. Might as well do something fun while Geoff struggles with the annual accounts…

Posted by on 29 Nov 2009 | Tagged as: Miscellaneous activities, Trying, but failing, to fly

The forecast was for windy weather, and so it was. We took our paragliders just in case and drove out to Olot, but could see the cloud duvet on Puig Sacalm and knew it wasn’t worth going flying. Instead we continued the tourist activities. Today’s turn was Vic, which is near Belmunt. We first went there nearly 14 years ago on our first foreign holiday together. At the time we were much taken with the town and tried to persuade my parents to move there when they came to live in Spain. However, being in the central depression, it is prone to strong inversions, which trap fog and smog under it, which can lay over the place like a blanket – sometimes for days on end.

However, when the sun is shining it’s a lovely place and even more improved since we went there all those years ago. With the new tunnel it’s only 45 minutes from home. We’ll go more often, as the landscape changes over the pass (or through the tunnel). On our side it’s very green, on the Vic side there’s more exposed rock and the place looks very different.

When we got to Vic the Saturday market was on. It’s a big affair, taking up all of the Plaza Mayor and the streets around it. We browsed and then walked around the old town.

We promised ourselves a day at the beach, but it wasn’t to be…

First thing this morning we had to answer some overdue email and then we played ‘in which box is the bikini?’. A lot of rummaging later we had assembled the necessary kit (cozzies, snorkels, towels, books, wet suits, etc.) and we set off for the seaside. The forecast had promised a moderate Tramuntana (the mistral-type wind which blows from the mountains to the sea), but on getting to Figueras, it was clear that it was a lot stronger than that. Being sand blasted in the wind isn’t much fun, so we turned round and went to the gorgeous gorge at Sadernes instead. It was lovely and warm, so much so that even Geoff went for a swim. A lot of lounging about, snoozing and lunching later, I feel pretty recovered from the drive. We may even go flying tomorrow.

Geoff writes: well, today’s weather was, guess what, wet and windy. However, incredibly, it just might be flyable at the weekend. Let’s hope so.

So we worked, both for the JISC conference in November, and the Supporting Deaf People conference in early 2010 (these conferences have a long lead-in).

And, more interestingly, we finally uploaded a few videos from the SIV course we did in April. The classic is Cris’s boat landing. Get the links from the bottom of theĀ Resources page above (used to be called the Articles page, but we changed it to allow for more multi-media content).

Geoff writes: still not feeling that well, we had a day out in Bridgnorth, which was much nicer than we thought. Sunny and hot too.

Rubbish weather as usual but we braved the wind and rain to go to an archeology talk at Bury Ditches, near Lydbury North.

It was run by two local archeologists who came dressed in Iron Age costumes, which don’t include brollies. They carried on regardless of the lashings of rain. The talk was fascinating and you soon forgot about the discomfort of wet trousers and feet.

Then back home for coffee and brownies. It’s the kind of warming comfort food you need in the depths of a British summer!

See photos of today.

It didn’t look promising for today and it started pouring from 9.30am. This was unfortunate, since Geoff’s family were coming to visit and what can you do in the rain?

We had tea, then lunch at the Castle Hotel in Bishop’s Castle. By this time it was windy, but the sky had cleared and it was a gorgeous day, so we headed for Snailbeach and the lead mines and then on to the Old School House tea room at the Bog (thanks for the tip Steve!).

When we got back, people had started hang gliding on the Mynd, so we went up for a look and a chat. Turned into a really nice evening…
