Forecast for today...More bad weather, more painting.

It brightened up in the afternoon and we decided to go to archery, despite the fact that a little rain seemed to be sitting towards the back of our house. As we drove up the Mynd we could see that ‘a little rain’ was something of an understatement. The whole valley was filled with a massive cunimb and the rain was blocking out the view of Corndon, Bishop’s Castle, etc. Typically, Church Stretton was bathed in sunshine.

We had an excellent archery session. I shot a round of 464 (out of a possible 540), so an improvement of 28 on last week and even more excitingly, I ended the round with a six gold end. Ta-da!

Geoff pretending he got 6 golds.Windy, windy, windy.

We went to do archery, and although our sighting was somewhat hampered by the wind, we shot a round and I had the highest score ever, so I was really pleased. Ok, it was only at 30 yards, but we’ve got to start back somewhere. Geoff is getting used to his new bow, but might need to do some work on the sight, so it doesn’t keep falling off – a bit of a hindrance in mid-draw.

Too chilly and windy to do anything else, so we’ve planned and shopped for the next DIY adventure…

Posted by on 22 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Archery, Trying, but failing, to fly

Everyone was eagerly awaiting today. The forecast seemed perfect. Lightish westerly winds and sunny. When we woke up this seemed to be confirmed but half an hour later, the wind seemed to be picking up, and half an hour after that, it was blown out for paragliders. We drove up anyway, but it was howling when we got on top. Lots of people had turned up, but we were pretty pessimistic about the prospects of the wind dropping so we headed to Church Stretton to sort out our archery club membership.

It was really nice to catch up with the archery guys and we got all our kit sorted and went to shoot. Because it’s been seven months, I assumed I would be pretty rusty (i.e. crap) but with a few tips from Jeff the coach, I was shooting better than I had at the end of last season, after six months practise.

Archery is very relaxing, and after spending five hours in the sunshine, I was pretty mellow, although my shoulders were aching. Big wave bars had formed over the Long Mynd, so we had written the flying off and it was still howling when we drove past launch on the way home. It did drop off at 6.30pm, and many people had a late evening flight.

It was cloudy and grey this morning so we did jobs. By lunchtime it was brightening up a little, so we went to do archery. It was our last shoot of the season and we were worse than ever. Hopefully the weather next summer will permit more practise. We certainly need it!

As we were shooting the sky started to look pretty good, but windy in places. Chairman Dave was at Bankside, but he wasn’t flying when we called and we decided to continue packing and sorting ready for three possible days of flying from tomorrow.

Forecast for today...Strong winds today. We went and did some archery, but the arrows kept being blown off course. That’s my excuse anyway. I have discovered that it doesn’t make a difference having a spectator. I’m rubbish anyway. Ho hum… LMSC committee meeting tonight, so a late one.

Geoff and I doing archery. The forecast was for a dry, maybe even occasionally sunny day. Yipee! Course it didn’t work out that way. The forecast deteriorated as it got closer and it became apparent that it would be pretty cloudy. We went to the Long Mynd to fly before the direction would change to SW. Three people were already in the air, so we set up and Geoff flew to Black Knoll, where he got low and had to slope land. He made it part of the way back later, but had to walk the rest of the way once the wind turned and it was no longer soarable.

I flew out and chased some birds which promptly flew off (typical!) and I just made it back to below take-off and had a hike back to the launch. After this it went very, very light and turned S.

Some people went to Clatter, but the sky became completely overcast, so we didn’t think it was worth the trip and went to do some archery instead. We called into
Beyond Extreme on the way to give back the Sigma (I’ve bought the Apen II), and the lovely Rachael gave us tea.

Michaela came with us to the archery field to keep score and umpire between us. Having an audience definitely affects our accuracy. We were rubbish.

Went to the Horseshoe’s open mic night again this week. Brilliant as usual.

See photos of today. Thanks to Michaela for the pics!

Forecast for today...

We tried to beat the weather this morning by going to do archery early. It worked for a bit, but we only got to shoot 7 ends before the rain came in. We sheltered from the first shower, emerged to get our kit ready, just to be rained on again. It was clear that the front had come in, so we packed up and it did indeed rain for the rest of the day.
