We had a lazy day. It was probably flyable and definitely skiable, but we decided to do something we haven’t done for ages… bum around the beach.
We’ve been meaning to go back to the Greek/Roman ruins at Empuries for years and went there today. Geoff sees this as the perfect tourist attraction. You get ancient monuments (two cultures for the price of one), sun, sea and education for the bargain price of 3 euros. It was interesting walking around the site, but our visit to Pompeii makes everything Roman seem less amazing.
We went cycling/blading and then found a little island you could rock hop to to read our books, have a picnic and chill out. Bliss.

We had a meeting this morning, so couldn’t get out early and by the time we were done, the wind had turned west and the front was approaching. Going east was going to give us the most sunshine, so we decided to be beach bums for the day.
We did the bay of Roses two and a half times by bike/blades, with a nice three course lunch on the sea front half way through. I threw the glider in the van just in case, but the balise on Sant Pere de Rodes was giving west, so no chance of a flight.

Too many choices today. Hang gliding, paragliding, beach, walking, cycling… There was supposed to be a front coming in and the weather was supposed to turn cloudy in the afternoon, so we decided to have a lazy day and go to the beach to do some swimming, roller-blading and cycling (with a bit of lunch and snoozing thrown in for good measure). Alas, it was not to be! Roger called to say he was free and another car changes everything. Since we were heading for the beach, we arranged to meet Roger at Palau Savardera to go flying at Sant Pere de Rodes.
We rushed out and I did get a swim before we headed up the mountain. As we were in the car park ready to walk up we could see the halo round the sun and the high stuff was coming in. There was nearly no wind on launch with just the odd waft up the front. It seemed as though the sky would shut down, so Roger launched and got one or two little bits of lift, but nothing he could turn in, so he went down. Geoff and I did pretty much the same. We were consoled by the fact that we had flown, but as we were sitting by the landing field having post-aviation beer the sky cleared and it became really hot and sunny again. It was probably great, but none of us could face a second climb up. Roger is off to Morocco for a month (lucky beggar), so we won’t see him again till December.

Today, it really was bad weather. Rained off and on all day. The forecast was better for France, and we did consider going to Targassonne, but it’s a couple of hours drive, and Richard and Judith were far too hungover to do anything like that. I worked again, all day, conference preparation, whilst Judith took Richard out to the Dali castle at Pubol and to the beach at Calella de Parafugell to walk off their hangovers.
Good job we didn’t go to Targassonne. Udo went there, but no good.
Sunday Richard leaves, and the weather is expected to improve.
Oh, and the bad news about today was the end of 3Jam, the text messaging service Judith set up for pilots in the Mynd area. 3Jam have started charging, so it would cost around £5 each time someone sent a text message to the group. A real shame, a lot of pilots found it very useful, and got flights they otherwise would have missed.

Forecast said a warm front would be heading our way from the west, so it would cloud over by the afternoon. Best plan then is to head as far east as possible! We decided not to bother taking the gliders and went to the beach instead (after a couple of hours work), for a swim, read and snooze in the sun. We left at 4pm when it did indeed cloud over. It was raining by the time we got back to La Garrotxa. Worked on the conference until very late.

Too many choices today. The weather was good for paragliding, hang gliding, going to the beach, walking… We’ve decided to do the activities which we won’t be able to do for much longer, so we went snorkeling. It was the perfect forecast for it: hot (26C), clear skies and a calm sea. We can fly all winter, but days like today for snorkeling are limited.
The snorkeling round here is excellent. You can see about 20 different types of fish within a few meters of the shore. There are shoals of fish to chase around and I was really hoping to see a squid, but no luck today. The rocks and vegetation are interesting as well, and today there was not one jelly-fish. We went in several times and I swam all around the bay. The water was warm once you were in and we didn’t really need the wet suits. Picnic in Roses to finish off the day.

We decided to do something relaxing on our final day in Spain so we went to the beach. We read and snoozed in the sunshine most of the day and then met up with Roger to go and have a late afternoon flight at Sant Pere de Rodes. I wasn’t well, so was the driver for the day. It was north, so there hadn’t been much sun on the face for hours and there wasn’t much lift, but the lower ridge worked and there were thermals popping off it. Geoff thermalled back up to launch height, where it got bouncy. Both landed on the beach at Port de la Selva and we had the customary apres vol beer.
Can’t believe we’re leaving… it’s been the best winter we’ve ever had in Spain.
